Dear Michael,
thank you for digging this beautiful recording out of the dust - one of a few Schwarzkopf songs I was not aware of.
Two other interesting interpretations:
Lotte Lehmann & Richard Tauber, 1924
https://youtu.be/JaiAFl9u9Uk
Tenor Josef Schmidt, 1933
https://youtu.be/f2berfUCRe8
And while I'm at it, you should probably not miss another beautiful song from the same Korngold opera.
Pierrots Tanzlied with Hermann Prey, 1957

It is a real beauty.
I have always loved this aria and all of Korngold's music. I grew up on it. First Korngold, then Morricone.
I love ES singing Strauss too. Crystalline sound, elegance of expression and a massive beating heart underneath: The Marschallin and The Last Four Songs sans pareil; and Mozart, Mozart, Mozart, lest we forget some real ES masterpieces.
Cheers
PS Richard Tauber is amazing too

Lucky you. Nobody knows Korngold these days. What is most unbelievable to me is that he wrote Die tote Stadt at the tender age of 22...alden wrote: I have always loved this aria and all of Korngold's music. I grew up on it. First Korngold, then Morricone.
I always liked her, since I was a boy. Today, in some interpretations, I think she is a little too much "Her masters virgin" - (a sweet reference to her husband W Legge). I discovered the older Lotte Lehmann later, and I think she often beats ES because she is more natural. And we should not forget Christa Ludwig, Morgen! https://youtu.be/Pe_b13Ihp3salden wrote:I love ES singing Strauss too. Gilda Butta, a Sicilian pianist, who plays the Ennio Morricone concerts almost exclusively delights us with a hauntingly beautiful piece by the Master.

(I am working on this piece on the cornet, but only my neighbors get to hear it (from far away) now. )
