Help with classic traditional waistband styles, please.

Thanks Anthony. Which in your opinion is the most traditional style? I always thought a 'french bearer' was the name for the tab on the inside that fastens the inner half of the fly - so if I understand both you and manton correctly, a 'waistband extension' is the name for the tab on the outside. If you have any way of illustrating what a 'full waistband' looks like then I would appreciate your trouble.

Oops, so it is. Apologies for any confusion caused by my mix up of clothing terms.

I would have to agree with Manton that either half or full waistband can be acceptable. I tend to prefer full as I think it looks better. In either case the extension band and french bearer area must.

With at least the half band it is possible usefully to have a watch pocket at the right front - concealed or at the waistband just under the waist coat 'point' below the waistband. Mercifully the centre band adjuster precludes any temptation to spoil the line of the trousers with back pockets - in use or decorative.
