Dear all,

Could anyone recommend a source for 50oz twill print ties, in a decent width (say, 9cm)? I rather like Drake's offerings, but they seem to have moved to the 8cm mark which is just too narrow for me. I am uncertain about their MTM offering: they seem to have increased the upcharge from 10 pounds to 30, and their webstore doesn't have a great many options for silks.

I have sent them an email, but if there is another brand to consider, I'd be very interested.

Kind regards,

Here's an option. I don't know specifically if their silks are 50oz, but they are very good. Not only do they do quasi-MTM, but they have a ton of things in their clearance "outlet" that might work for you.

www.samhober.com is another good source, with very reasonable pricing. No idea about the weight of his silks, but David does respond to e-mail.

Thanks very much.

Cappelli and Hober are two sources that I've identified for lovely ties in general. I have become obsessed with heavy-weight silks lately, and I don't think that either use them, but the enormous premium that Drake's seems to want is dissuading me pretty quickly.

Sadly, Hober's range of prints is a bit limited at present, so I think I'll grab a couple of Cappellis to try out.

Which brings me to the next question - is 3-fold enough to tie a decent knot, or does one need to go to 5-fold?

I've never done 5-fold, and I still like what they do. Your taste (and shirt-collar, and choice of silk) may vary.

Try Emma Willis. Drake makes their ties and they are generally of heavier weight, and wider, than they sell under their own label.

I've got several Capelli's 3-folds and am very happy with the knots, especially with the effortless dimple (except for the unlined ones, which are also more prone to wrinkling).
