Thank you, David! I never thought to hear better-controlled baroque ornament than that of Julianne Baird, whose voice was/is lovely but never powerful. This is quite splendid technique with range and strength. The rest of the newly released debut album looks promising as well. I suspect you're right about her prospects. If she can act, she will be a sensation.

Been listening to a lot of old Blue Note jazz on vinyl and XRCD 24 from Audio Wave.

Had this in my head the past week.

I Need a Dollar

(Well actually I need 5000 for a shiny new suit.)

Aloe Blacc

http://youtu.be/nFZP8zQ5kzk

I need a dollar dollar, a dollar is what I need
hey hey
Well I need a dollar dollar, a dollar is what I need
hey hey
And I said I need dollar dollar, a dollar is what I need
And if I share with you my story would you share your dollar with me

Bad times are comin and I reap what I don't sow
hey hey
Well let me tell you somthin all that glitters ain't gold
hey hey
It's been a long old trouble long old troublesome road
And I'm looking for somebody come and help me carry this load

[Bridge:]
I need a dollar dollar, a dollar is what I need
hey hey
Well I need a dollar dollar, a dollar is what I need
Well I don't know if I'm walking on solid ground
Cause everything around me is falling down
And all I want - is for someone - to help me

I had a job but the boss man let me go
He said
I'm sorry but I won't be needing your help no more
I said
Please mister boss man I need this job more than you know
But he gave me my last paycheck and he sent me on out the door

[Bridge:]
Well I need a dollar dollar, a dollar is what I need
hey hey
Said I need a dollar dollar, a dollar is what I need
hey hey
And I need a dollar dollar, a dollar is what I need
And if I share with you my story would you share your dollar with me
Well I don't know if I'm walking on solid ground
Cause everything around me is crumbling down
And all I want is for someone to help me

What in the world am I gonna to do tomorrow
is there someone whose dollar that I can borrow
Who can help me take away my sorrow
Maybe its inside the bottle
Maybe its inside the bottle
I had some good old buddy his names is whiskey and wine
hey hey
And for my good old buddy I spent my last dime
hey hey
My wine is good to me it helps me pass the time
and my good old buddy whiskey keeps me warmer than the sunshine
Hey Hey
Your mom of mayhem just a child has got his own
Hey Hey
if god has plans for me I hope it ain't - written in stone
Hey Hey
because I've been working working myself down to the bone
and I swear on grandpas grave I'll be paid when I come home
Hey Hey

[Bridge:]
Well I need a dollar dollar, a dollar is what I need
hey hey
Said need a dollar dollar, a dollar is what I need
hey hey
Well I need a dollar dollar, a dollar is what I need hey hey
And if I share with you my story would you share your dollar with me
come on share your dollar with me
go ahead share your dollar with me
come on share your dollar give me your dollar
share your dollar with me
come on share your dollar with me

Gentlemen,

now the Magic flute is by far not my favourite opera. But listen what this dream team makes out of it - simply spectacular :D

Tempo is a little bit sluggish for my taste, but Richter is Richter.

Nice music for Fridays...

If someone needed to be cheered up on this Monday: see Lenny having fun conducting (and dancing to) his own festive Candide overture.

Gentlemen,

to revive an old thread: yesterday, I heard Mozart's clarinet concerto for the first time performed with a basset clarinet it was originally written for. A revelation. For the modern clarinet we are used to, the piece has to be transposed.

You may notice how much more tender and softer the basset clarinet sounds.

I cannot share Sabine Meyer here - she was magic - but Dame Thea King http://youtu.be/W105IOgd5JA and also Sharon Kam playing the first movement, http://youtu.be/W5Xx79yGBpk
The second clip has a problem from 8:27, but you see the instrument here.

Cheers, David

Lou Reed passed away this weekend. I´m sure there are some of you out there in the LL who, forty years ago, worshiped this guy because he couldn´t care less about not having any mainstream appeal.

Over the past ten years I have been getting record after record of his and the Velvet Underground and have been loving them (or learning how to love them). I appreciate what you say about him not caring about general opinion. It sometimes frightens me how strong this attitude is present in the music.
