Traditional stores which stock silk scarves (both plain silk and lined with cashmere):

1. Hermes. Very expensive. Without equal.

2. Turnbull & Asser. Expensive. Lovely designs and workmanship.

3. Paul Stuart. A little less expensive. I know a local New Yorker who makes the scarves.

I bought a couple of nice ones from Liberty in the sales last year. You can pick up some very nice pashminas in Istanbul.

No, I have only one silk scarf but find that they can have such a large impact on an outfit that it would be worthwhile to add a few more.

Plus they are so lightweight and small that they are easy to take along when traveling.

Yes. They are the most expensive. Sometimes the prices are laughable.

I must confess that I rarely pay full retail. My Hermes purchases are usually at the Hermes sales, eBay, and re-sale shops.

However, the quality of the silk, printing, design, etc., are superb.

A friendly warning: never let your wife enter Hermes. If she does, you are doomed.

Another brand worth mentioning is Michael Drake. I would place Drake as a close second to Hermes. In some ways Drake is equal or superior.

I agree that a light silk scarf can adds to an outfit. I never wear a coat without one.

You can get a "version" of a classic Barbour jacket, made by a known Italian fashion house, which is only half as good as the original, but which costs twice as much. Why?

For pretty much the same reasons as a pair of limited edition 'designer trainers' can cost the same as a pair of hand made shoes from a top name. It's nothing to do with the quality of materials and skill in constructing and everything to do with conspicuous consumption. Such is the world we live in and I suspect it’s always been that way.

A month or so ago I acquired a lovely silk/cashmere scarf from Davies and Son on Savile Row for a very reasonable sum - £30 I think. (I remember when I had a reliable memory... or perhaps I don't). Anyway, they were having a bit of a clearout - hence the sharp price, and they only had a few left - get in quick before the first proper cold snap of the winter!

New & Lingwood have some very pretty scarves at the moment, but at £225 I can't afford them.

I bought one in Budd for £85 (maroon with a white/silver polka dot pattern).

I own more than I should...
I find that particularly with the rougher tweed jackets they add such a great touch of finesse when you are not in the mood / setting for a tie.
