Sometimes when standing, sometimes not. If I'm around family and friends I will generally go unbuttoned.

It depends on if I am wearing a waistcoat or not. Almost always, when I'm standing, the jacket is buttoned; rarely, if ever, when I am sitting.

I never button when seated. Very seldom button up when standing. I prefer the informality, and it is cooler.

I will button up while standing, and unbutton while seated.

If I am wearing a three piece suit, (which I have not done since Autumn of 1988  ) I would want the jacket to be tailored so I could button it comfortably however, I would leave it unbuttoned while sitting and standing to show of the vest, and also the watch chain if I am wearing one.

I noticed that Brian Williams of NBC Nighty News keeps his jacket buttoned while standing and seated.

Best Regards,

Seated, usually unbuttoned
Standing no waistcoat, buttoned
Standing, waistcoat, unbuttoned.
Why? can't say but that's the way I've done it.

Standing always buttoned, seated never...unless I forget. I always feel embarrassed if I have stepped over to a co-worker's office next door and left my jacket unbuttoned.

Suit Coat (no waistcoat): buttoned when standing ... unbuttoned when seated
Suit Coat (w/ waistcoat): typically buttoned when standing ... unbuttoned when seated
Odd Jacket/Coat: depends upon the cloth* when standing ... unbuttoned when seated
* the more casual the cloth ... the more likely it will be unbuttoned.
