I have three pair of eg oxfords in a 202 last, size 10c.They look terrific and fit nearly so,being only slightly long.Would the 82 last in size 9.5d be a trifle shorter and give nearly the same look?

My guess would be, the ‘stick length’ of last 82 is about ½ size (4mm) longer than last 202. (Stick length, named after the measuring stick, is the overall length of a last, which quite frequently diverts from the size, although, in theory, the size should be the same as the total length of the last). So, I think, 202 in size 10 has about the same length as 82 in size 9 ½. Potential problem is the ball or joint (the widest part) of the foot, which is likely to be 4mm further back in the size 9 ½ than in the size 10. The additional length for the 82 is probably solely in the toe.

The difference in length between last 202 and 82 won’t be as much as in the drawing, but will be similar in principle

If you decrease the longer last in length, the widest point will be further back too, as the longer length is in the toe.

You might want to contact John Garner at Edward Green and ask for the measurements of the two lasts: stick length, joint, instep, heel. That should give facts (as opposed to guess work).

Rolf, Thanks for your very infomative and detailed answer. I will indeed take your advice. The last thing I want to do is make a mistake here when what I presently have is nearly perfect.
