Overcoat Length
Apologies in advance if this has been covered already. I am wondering how long an overcoat should be - should it extend half way down the calf or stop just after the knee? I am very tall - does this make a difference?
The taller the man, the longer the overcoat. Several inches below the knee should suffice.
Above is a good rule of thumb, but different lengths for different overcoats.
A trim Chesterfield can be shorter. A greatcoat tends to be longer. A carcoat can be at or above the knees. If you feel you need to direct your tailor (the big firms and the established solo houses will know what is right) Have a look at a few photographs to get a sense of what general proportions go with the what type of coat so you will know what works for the type you want.

Wouldn't a solid, long coat tend to let the shape of the person appear even longer? I am 6'3 quite (or very) slim and have always been told by my tailor to go for 2 button suits (as 3 button ones tend to have shorter lapels and thus may appear out of proportion) and shorter coats, possibly with a belt to disrupt the silhouette. The taller the man, the longer the overcoat.
Or was he sending me into the wrong direction?
