Dear gentlemen of LL club!

Can you give me advice about button for smoking shirt? The form of buttons: it mast be round only or can be oval form? I see very nice buttons from black mother-of-pearl is oval form, but my customer work in England regular.

What are you thinking about oval buttons? Is it correctly or not?

Tank you,
Valentina.

Dear Valentina,

I think that buttons sewn to the shirt should be round, not oval. But you may be referring to stud buttons on a dinner shirt (worn with a dinner jacket, often called a "smoking" in languages other than English), attached by a spring mechanism or other metal form.

I personally prefer round stud buttons, too; but some men enjoy square, oval, or irregular shapes. The shape no longer is so restricted as once it was, though the size of the stud button still should not be larger than eight or nine millimeters in diameter, I think.

Do let me know if this is not the information you seek.

With all good wishes,

RWS

P.S. -- I was pleased to see your handsome website, which I could appreciate even with much disused Russian. -- RWS
