Couch, thank you for a very full and illuminating reply. My own coat comes to just below the knee and I have found that to be an ideal length.

My tailor, alas, retired some years ago so I am unable to quiz him further. I am, of course, now in the position of having to find a new tailor, which is how I first stumbled on LL, and which appears to be a task not without difficulty.
