Dear Frog, I have only ever seen television interviews of Pamela Harriman and she appeared totally charming and delightful as you say. She was the daughter of the 11th Baron Digby and bore the title the Hon Pamela Digby and, being educated at home by governesses probably accounts for the excellent French. I should adjust part of what I said earlier as her second husband after RC was Leland Hayward and she married Harriman much later. I always found it odd that she, as a Brit, would end up as US Ambassador - especially in such an important Embassy - although she did take out American citizenship. Despite the break-up from Randolph, she remained on good terms with the Churchills - of course, the current Winston Churchill MP is her son. As you say, she was of a good family and an interesting one at that - since her great great aunt was the adventuress and traveller Jane Digby (1807-1881) who ended up married to a Syrian Sheikh.
