Needless to say, I agree with this - and eat your hearts out admirers of CG's suit in North By Northwest - moreover, he often used to do up all 3 buttons on a vestless SB suit which is really odd.

I'm not sure that central heating, or the lack of it, has much to do with the decline in the popularity of waistcoats. With the much lighter fabrics available, wearing a DB with a waistcoat is certainly not something to be avoided on temperature grounds...

Additionally, no single garment so adds to the versatility of a suit as a waistcoat since it extends wearability of lighter clothed suits far past the warmest seasons.

I find it hard to believe that those two comments were made within a single breath. As you point out, wearing vests "extends wearability of lighter clothed suits far past the warmest seasons." This makes sense as the wearer has another layer to insulate his body. Obviously, this has the potential to make someone uncomfortably hot.

That said, I will again say that I am a fan of waistcoats, despite being one who is more often than not uncomfortably warm (and I'm on the trim side!). But ultimately, the temperature outside and indoors will affect my decision whether to wear one.

I generally run cold. therefore, it's not as much of an issue for me as it may be for others. I couldn't wear an 8 oz cloth in the spring or fall without a vest. it'd be too chilly. Your choices are your own. I stand by my statements.

My issue is not your internal climate control. It was that you said a waistcoat could allow one to wear a lighter suit when it gets colder out right after saying that temperature shouldn't affect the decision.

Well, never mind. We both like them and that is what counts. (for some reason, there is no such thing as a plain smiley face any more )
