I do not think temperature in isolation is a problem. Humidity is, as natural materials can suffer from mould.
The other big danger are moths.
I think a combination of insecticide (moth paper, or whatever is on offer around the world) plus good ventilation to keep the closet dry is the best way forward. I would be circumspect in chosing basement rooms that can be more humid than you think.

Dear Matt - thank you for this inspiration! I live in a hundred-year old arts and crafts home that abounds with built-in furniture so an idea such as yours, properly executed in the appropriate style, should fit the bill for me.iammatt wrote:For shoe storage, I had a very narrow closet cut into a well space in our house. The space was just walled off dead space before we cut in. It ended up being the perfect size for a shoe closet. Here are some pictures. Unfortunately, there is not enough room to get a shot from any distance:
I believe the picture cuts off one or two available rows, but I can't remember. It works amazingly well. Often homes have unknown little closets waiting to happen that you can find by scouring your plans. Luckily, this area is directly across from my own closet.
Many thanks,
Tony
