Blazer style choices

Dear all,

If you were to do a Blazer today, what choices would you make?

1. Patch or flap pockets?
2. Patch or welt pocket on the chest?
3. Three button, three roll two, two button or one? (I am mainly debating with myself on two vs three roll two)
4. Would you ever use horn buttons? I am personally not sure of gold /gilt buttons for myself.

1. Patch pockets generally. I just had a jacket made with jetted pockets at the suggestion of my tailor. It doesn't look bad in my opinion.
2. I like a welt pocket on the chest.
3. Two button.
4. I only get horn buttons on odd jackets. I've never been a fan of metallic buttons on jackets.

Flap pockets (more versatile)
Welt pocket
2 button on SB, 6 x 2 on a DB
horn buttons on both SB and DB (a lot more versatile). I would consider metal buttons only for a DB and if I had already 3 other ones.

I have done patch or flap. The latter is better for something you will travel in. If you would hesitate to roll it up and stuff into the overhead, try patch.

Bronze or gunmetal buttons.

2 or 3/2.5. Good to have both available.

And, of course, DB. 6-button, straight flaps.

3. 3 -> 2.,5, long, springy roll (not a fold)
4. On my very dark flannel winter blazer, plain gilt shanked buttons. Correct and dressy. On my summer Piuma blazer, streaked natural horn. More relaxed. (Though I always have my eye out for antique hand-engraved silver buttons with an appropriate device and a nice patina. Once at Tender Buttons [RIP] I saw some close enough to make the quest permanent.)

May I ask a closely related question, ? (without wanting to hijack the thread...)

Is a blazer traditionally cut to a different shape from a suit jacket of similar fabric/ weight? Or would a tailor default to the same jacket pattern.?

I suppose the suspicion that it might not be the same as a suit jacket would come from the idea that a blazer is, in origin actually a smart tracksuit top - although it has typically become a fairly smart item for most.

My school sports blazer (40+ years ago) was sized to fit over a cricket jumper- my latest version (2b 3xPatch) is quite fitted..

My understanding is that a blazer is a jacket used to watch other people play sports, or when a player is on duty (opening of the Olympics comes to mind) or off duty off the field, rather than a garment to play a sport in.

Do people row in rowing blazers?

Or off duty— when the race or match is done and you want to cover up and go for a drink.

I have 3 DBs 20 ozs, 18 ozs, 13 ozs....Gold, Gunmetal and Horn....all welt pockets......

Yes, an old friend indeed, and memories of many other old friends added in. Its got over 29 yrs on the clock and made from H Lesser 20 ounce worsted cloth. It looks and wears great and best of all...it fits. (As you guys age a bit, you will come to understand the importance of clothing that still fits. Tailor can't help you. Only you can help you. .)

4. It would not be a blazer without the metal buttons. If brass/ gold is too flashy for your taste, try silver.

It's all personal choice I suppose. Myself, double breasted flap pockets and welt chest, always gilt or brass buttons.

So I did the following:

DB 6x2 blazer with gold buttons - very classic

SB summer - hopsack 11 oz, horn buttons, patch pockets, 2B
SB winter - LL cashmere, horn buttons, flap pockets, 2B

What I found is that I wear the SB jackets much more and I think it’s partially because SB is easier to wear than DB (less attention) and partially because of the buttons as the gold ones really stand out.
