Socks that last!
Thanks for all the information. I am not expecting miracles, but all I ask for is for an premium sock to last as long as a cheap (i.e. Uniqlo) sock. Indeed, if Uniclo sold long socks they would suffice most of the time.

I have very good experience with Falke No 9 (cotton) in the summer and Falke Airport (wool, cotton and other threads) in the winter. I even wash them on high temperatures without causing any damage or shrinkage.
Unfortunately socks with linen or silk content tend to die relatively fast. It is a pity.
I think I will design and produce my own model of over the calf summer socks. I asked at Bresciani if they could do a special run from a special fabric for me, but I was quoted a minimum order which was too high for my pocket so I postponed the idea, but I have not given up. If I make some progress with the project I will keep you updated.

I can report that the Viccel socks are holding up very well. They were very brightly coloured but have toned down over time. They are akin to the old rugby socks and are great for everyday casual wear. I bought four long, heavy cotton pairs and have worn them constantly.
I also bought some more luxurious socks, but so far they are still unworn. New, unworn socks are beautiful things.

Nice price and colors on the Viccel cotton socks, but I don't much care for cotton. I wonder how the wool/silk holds up?
I use others for my 'posh' socks. The beauty of Viccel is that you don't have to care about them too much, so they suit days wearing casual trousers or when you are at home.
I have followed the recommendation of Viccel in this thread and so far, I am very happy with their summer weight cotton socks.
See this in the context of the fact that my average day revolves around sitting in front of the computer at home. For example, presently I am in my studio with the door open and a breeze drifting in, cheap (but MTM) french blue, lightweight, wide legged, slacks, navy, open-collar, polo shirt, bare feet and shoes kicked under my desk.arch wrote:I use others for my 'posh' socks. An infinitely useful category. Stressing about cashmere or silk is more than I really want to get crazy about right now.
I just prefer to have wool or linen than cotton on my feet, even through the summer.

I exhausted the possibilities of Jeremyn Street years ago for socks. These days I get a big delivery once a year from Crimson: https://www.crimson-cashmere.com/men-socks. Great colours, fast delivery, beautifully thin, long cotton socks.
As long as your feet are well-groomed, great longevity too!

I think some people have 'heavy' feet can wear socks out quicker. My socks from Pantherella seems fine, I like Gammarelli too (can't seem to find navy though).
I do believe fine things don't often equate to durability, it's just a fact of life.

This is turning into a good database. To amplify one other comment, Mazarin makes a line of specifically super-durable socks, in cotton or wool blends. So far, they seem to deliver the goods. The main problem is an extension of their virtue-- they are VERY solidly built, and the synthetic makes them feel less friendly on the feet than all-linen or all-wool. But they come in lots of sizes, offer all the useful classic colors, and so far seem to be wearing well. And a few washes makes the polyester a bit fuzzier and therefore more tolerable. Available at what the French try to think of as Boston Red Sox:

For more standard issue, Ben Silver has some good standards in wool. One option I like is the blue or black sets. http://www.bensilver.com/Wool-Ribbed-Tw ... KbNsZhKg2w
Blue has blue toes, and black has red. So no confusing them.
For my academic use, I have a handful of each, and then undecorated grey ones along with the brighter colors that won't be mixed up. http://www.bensilver.com/Wool-Dress-Soc ... KbNtJhKg2w

Obviously have not tried all the socks under the moon, but I have zero complaints about Gammarelli and Mazarin (comfort, durability), I think they feel better than say Pantherella, Falke or the like.
Credit to Mes Chaussettes Rouges really, they are the website that introduced me to both these brands.

The secret to having socks that last is buying lots of them. Think months, rather than weeks-worth of socks, and you won't have to worry about them.
