Dressing a Thornproof

Dear Members

(not sure this is the right spot for such question)

Anyone that has an LL Thornproof jacket or suit with suggestions for shirt and tie combinations?

The LL Thornproof suit is probably my favorite of all, even if I don't wear it often given it does not fit in a business environment. But there is something about the cloth that makes me feel great (some might say greater than I am). Lots of comments from the fair sex help as well.

What I am struggling with is finding a fitting shirt and tie combination. Although normally the shirt is the canvas and the suit te frame, with this particular cloth I feel it is the other way around.

Would very much appreciate your suggestions.

Keep it simple. Solid, dark, textured tie and solid linen or Oxford cloth shirt.

for a change of pace try a bright yellow knit tie with a white Oxford buttondown shirt. Great combination specially if your suit is worn with a vest. For country outings, or even for daytime weekend city wear, when the activity or the company calls for at least a minimum of formality, like a nice garden lunch or going to the racecourse.

Dear Rick,

expanding a little on Concordia: light blue or cream (from pale butter cream to almost yellow) linen or oxford shirts are my preferred combination. In terms of ties: grenadine or knit ties, solid colour, in blue, dark green or brown. Cashmere also works.

Thank you very much for your kind replies.

The cream shirting I had already tried to satisfaction, but had not thought about light blue at all. I haven't tried a white shirt as I find the contrast to stark, but a bright knit yellow tie might be nice and adventurous. The only tie in my possesion that I like until now is a cashmere brown, flecked tie (which suits me well in many other occasions). Next time I am at Cappelli's, I will look for more options.

I like wearing flannel in patterns, like the classic British Viyella shirts, with my tweeds. Ties are often wool plains or knitted silk.(In the photo above rich, heavy moleskin round the neck.) Its pretty straightforward stuff really.

I tend to reserve poplins etc. and silks for worsteds, some flannels etc.

I wear linen shirts with linen exclusively.
