American rap is sort of a cultural mystery for me. But I learnt that if I keep my mind open and get the right help (written lyrics and references about the meaning in the comments below the videos) I can enjoy the experience.

Dear Hectom

So nice to see someone else here enjoying this genre. There are really great rappers out there. French rap in particular can be beautiful. And that is before trying to understand the lyrics, which is hard for non-natives given the slang. But just the melodic voice with a good beat can make my feet tap and my hips shake.

I´m not sure if Stromae qualifies as a typical French rapper but I enjoy his music a lot. My son (13 y.o.) is my guide in these matters. He says that the British rappers -guys like Chip and Bugzy Malone- are also of attention due to their particular rhythm (compared to the Americans). I like the Americans more, though.

Maybe you think like me, that classical composers are not what they used to be. But amongst those still alive and working, Glass is my favorite. Good enough to occupy some of my precious listening time vis a vis other late household names. This one is a beautiful, if harmless, collection of songs that I played as background of today´s activities.

I like rap.
But it's everything we are taught today is incorrect: mysogyny materialism racism drugs.
Issues of respect power violence are central.

I quoted some lyrics to a group of academics at cocktails not too long ago and they were scandalized by me doing so.

I don't know what to make of this.

The opening sepia shot looks like the Piazza del Plebiscito.

Not quite so nice today sadly.

Actually, next to it. Piazza Trieste e Trento. You can even see the Umberto I gallery in the back. And, if you know, you can "sense" Sartoria Solito one block up Via Toledo. :)
