Bevelled Waist
The waist is the narrow part of the shoe sole (where the sole lifts off to disappear under the heel again). In a bevelled waist the sole material gets cut off as narrowly as possible and at an angle (bevel). This makes the shoe look lighter and more elegant. Quite often this is combined with a distinctly rounded waist (fiddle back).
English bespoke shoemakers are very fond of turning the waist into a piece of art. Here is one of Tony’s bespoke samples to demonstrate the bevelled waist.
