In a few months I'm planning on investing in a pair of patent leather shoes.
I know how to care for my calfskin shoes, but am clueless about patent shoes.

They should need very little care. To remove splashes of sherry, wine, port, brandy, in that order, I find a spot of dish-washing detergent in warm water does the trick very nicely - followed by a rub down with a dry soft cloth. Restores the shine perfectly

I have a 25 yo pair of Allen Edmonds patent leather dress shoes. At the time I bought them, the salesman told me to use window cleaner if I ever needed to clean them. So far, I've never needed anything more than a damp cloth.
