Would any LL members know if Sastrería Cheverny is still in business? I intend to be in BA for a week later this month, and they come highly recommended (particularly by the old LL thread by RWS).

Dear Badden, have you made your trip to BA already?
It seems that Sastrería Cheverny has closed the doors of its shop across the French Embassy for good, and master tailor José Sica is nowhere to be found.

Unfortunately Buenos Aires is not what it used to be (if it ever was) in sartorial terms. If what you are looking for is an "old guard" artisan tailor formed in the British or -most likely- Italian tradition, I´m afraid they are all gone by now and there has been very little replenishment of work force in that area.
There are a few tailor shops left that would compete strictly on the basis of price -particularly when the exchange rate is favorable- but only within what I would call "the medium range of quality" (good but limited selection of cloths, decent cut, good fitting, average workmanship, and perennial non reliable service).
A recent newcomer of note may be Sastrería Vitturi on San Martín street. But I have not tried it and only have third-hand references. (Actually I have not been tempted to commission anything in Buenos Aires since the local financial crisis in 2002 when you could have the best custom made suit for under US$500).
Another shop that has survived for more than 65 years is Master Sastrería on Santa Fe street. This is nowadays more MTM than bespoke.
It´s a sorry state of affairs, I know. RWS saw it coming in his posts about Buenos Aires a few years back.

A very good friend, well versed in Italian tailoring, tells me there are still good shirtmakers in Buenos Aires. Carazo, at Marcelo T. de Alvear 847, is a very good one -- so he tells me. I´ve seen their work and liked it.
Unfortunately, Cheverny is no more. Closed.

Hi, I am late to the party here, having just tried the shop after writing down the numbers yesterday from internal pocket of the first coat I had made there by Mr. Maturano (+54 11 4812 1198, which is disconnected, and 4811 4724). What a shame. There were some young people around Mr. Maturano when he was alive, including a very fetching young lady who aspired to become a tailor; perhaps there wasn't enough business. The sort of relaxed Italian tailoring which seems de rigeur these days was nailed by these guys. That said, when the old man was alive they could turn out anything.
