It is partly a question of price as well. If a two-piece suit costs 100% of a given price, the tree-piece one will clock in at a about 125–133%. (That ratio stays about the same, whether it is Men’s Wearhouse, Kiton or Savile Row.)
That’s a lot of extra money for something, seen by a majority of men as non-essential.
Three Piece Suits Returning?
Rather of the same mind, Bengal. However, I do think that three-piece suits have a certain dignity, gravitas or whatever you want to call that a two piece of commensurate quality cannot match. I liked wearing them at Oxford. However, in the mild climate where I live, it's hard for me to justify the extra expenditure.bengal-stripe wrote:It is partly a question of price as well. Is it for the sakes of the boutonniere and handkerchief?Ray wrote:Another consideration when considering a two piece or three is of course the pocket watch. I personally like that look. but I would prefer a wrist watch to having the fob watch on the lapel.
I just can't think of a dark two buttons suit without a vest.
I'm evr thinking of a linen ecru vest for spring summer, but I must say that my tailor charges me with 15% of a suit.

I love three piece suits and odd vests which I usually accompany with a pocket watch and chain. Though I get lots of compliments (Got one today) I would probably be somewhat non-plussed if I saw lots of them around since wearing vests has been out of style for so long.
HMMM--- Come to think of it, I hope that vests and three piece suits don't come back into style as I am enjoying my being considered eccentric, individualistic or ----dare I say it-------cutting edge.

I wouldn't say that three piece suits were returning as much as double breasted suits.
When attending formal events (this is high school, remember? Formal has yet to get past a dark suit and tie) I have seen atleast a good few standing out of the crowd by wearing db suits. I think I'm the only one who has ever worn a 3-piece suit.
Or maybe I've just never noticed before?
I think it would be interesting to see double breasted waistcoats back on the market, again. Or how about these belted ones?
BTW, how does one acquire a watch fob for carrying a pocketpatch in their waiscoat pocket and on a button? I have a chain, but it attaches to my waistband or belt loop and then goes into the watch pocket of my pants. Any online stores?
