We have discussed this topic before. I have always insisted on zero but am beginning to reconsider. What would members advise as to the proper amount for a collar with about a 4 inch spread and high band? My ties are lined so that a standard four-in-hand produces a moderately substantial knot.

You made me run to my closet and measure some of my shirts.
Hey......I see that 4 inches seems pretty narrow compared to my own spreads which all have around 5 and half inches between collar points.
But I guess that tie space has less to do with the spread (just for general harmony) and more with the kind of knot you favor.
For the rather substantial knot that you tie, I think that a 3/4 of an inch space will do. Combine that gap with the high collar band and a firm lined necktie, and it will be perfect for a nice perky four-in-hand.

hectorm,
Thank you for your timely response. It prompted me to do some additional measuring of my own. Most of my shirts have about a 5 inch spread. Originally, I must have measured the one that was more narrow. Decided to take your advice for my next shirt order. I'll let you know how the end product works out.

Well, it's good to experiment a bit with your collars and knots.
Too little tie space and your collar will squeeze and flatten your knot down. Too much and it will look like you didn't button up your collar.
