It is still cool in Pennsylvania for early April. I am now wearing flannel but very soon the day will come to rotate out my 5 flannel suits in favor of worsteds. Although I always enjoy the coming of spring, this will be a forlorn day. For those of you who enjoy wearing flannel as I do (I guess that is just about everyone) when do you consign it to summer rest? Perhaps better asked, at what temperature?

Dear Rodes,

temperature is only one element among others. Other factors are humidity, air condition where you work, suit construction (type of canvas used, amount of padding used).

I was wearing my brown LL DB with its waistcoat last week on a trip to Warsaw. It was ca 15C, but very windy. My colleagues, male and female, all complained about weather being terrible. I was the only one not wearing an overcoat and not complaining. But it was likely the last time I was wearing the suit as a three piece.

In Switzerland where I live, we know the "frost saints" - Mamertus May 11, Pancratius May 12, Servatius May 13, Bonifatius May 14 and finally Cold Sophia May 15. Until May 15, temperature can drop below 0 Celsius, thus present a danger to some plants. In the past ten years, their effect was rather mild and I stop wearing winter clothing by mid April circa. But the most sensible guide may be trusting your senses :D

Cheers, David

My four flannel suits had their last Outing some weeks ago due to a very mild winter in Austria this year. I have only been able to wear my LL Donegal Tweed Ulster maybe once or twice last November :( . We also do have "die Eisheiligen" but further Flannel days seem very unlikely.
