Does Peter Luger have a web site? Also if your in the mood for some history with your steak you might want to try Sparks Steakhouse. Thats where Mob Boss Big Paul was shot in 1985 while getting out of his Lincoln Town Car. Never been there, but I hear its good.

Full disclosure: I'm not a meat eater, but I find that steak houses are some of the best places to have plain fish.

The conventional wisdom is that Peter Luger is the best. Alfred Hitchcock said that they were the best steaks on earth.

I recently went in a private room at Del Frisco which is on Sixth Avenue at about 49th Street. (McGraw-Hill Building?) It's in a very big and tall space which was probably a bank.

The joint was jumping on a Thursday night with tons of young people.

The food was excellent. (I had salmon.) The others said that the beef was excellent.

Luger's is by far the best for Porterhouse in New York, because of the quality of their meat and the length of time they age it. In Manhattan, however, I really recommend MarkJoseph (spelled as one word) www.markjosephsteakhouse.com, located at Peck Slip and Water Street. It was founded by some folks from Luger's and follows Luger's customs. Wolfgang's, a new place on 33rd and Park, is also a Luger's copy and is excellent, though, in my opinion, not as good as MarkJoseph.

I agree that Peter Luger's is absolutely the best. The food is great and its in a wonderful historical location. If you're going make sure that you make reservations in advance as it is often difficult to get in during prime time. You should also expect that they do things spectacularly but their way.

I haven't been in a few years but you could order any steak you wanted as long as it was a porterhouse. They may have also had lamb chops but no chicken, smurf and turf, etc. Creamed spinach is the vegetable and fresh onions and tomatoes are the salad of choice.

My love for steakhouses has been reborn in Philadelphia. I never tried Luger's in NYC, but if you are in Philly and need a steakhouse, I highly recommend two, both of which are sheets better than anything I had in NYC (though I admit there are quite a few additions to the NYC steak scene since I left in 2000).

I agree with what's said above.

Also, while certainly not the best in New York, I think Del Friscos is the best "standard" steakhouse: the best of the second tier, so to speak.

There are a few Luger alumni restaurants and they are all good steakhouses. I think if you are near one you should patronize it, but if you're asking what's THE NY Steakhouse, Lugers (IMHO) is it and its worth a visit back to the mother ship every now and again.

I do like Gallager's and have to get over to Luger to do the comparison. If you're into wine, Sparks has a great list - certainly more extensive (and expensive) than that at Gallager's. If I recall Gallagher's had maybe a couple dozen selections, while Sparks list goes on and on. Sounds like the list is meagre at Luger too.
