Thanks, Terry. I didn't know of this film. A little stiff compared to the Village Vanguard recording of it, but still amazing work. Just think what Scott LaFaro could have done with a few more years. When I listen in semi-darkness to the two live Vanguard albums, hearing the glasses clink and the conversations bubbling quietly at the tables, I'm convinced that if I just listen closely enough I can hear the news from 1961 . . . but I can certainly hear the incredibly relaxed playing of the greatest piano trio ever, at the end of a long gig. By then they knew each other so well they could trade phrases in their sleep. Improv at the highest level, as you say.tteplitzmd wrote:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dH3GSrCmzC8
Bill Evans Trio: Waltz for Debby
It doesn't get any better.
Music of the Day
Chuck Israels on bass in this video. Agreed: the Village Vanguard session is better, but this one
isn't chopped liver.

Thanks for setting me straight on the bassist here. So is this Larry Bunker on drums? Doesn't look much like Motian. Somebody among the 1600 commenters on this clip dates it to 1965, but with no further explanation.tteplitzmd wrote:Chuck Israels on bass in this video. St. Bartholomew holding his own skin (with Signor Buonarotti's face in it) after being flayed alive: too much.Costi wrote:hectorm, here it is - MUCH better...]
The Sistine Chapel: way too much. Ergo, IMO much better.
And thank you for bringing up Ysaÿe's music. I hadn't listened to it in years.
Of course, hectorm, it is all TOO much - it is an obsession!
But how does music become obsessive? What makes a musical phrase haunt you for days, while another (though enjoyable) passes through without leaving a mark? Bach certainly had a lot of these phrases that stick to the ear, so I agree with Ysaye adding him to this potion (not a cocktail!), because musical obsessions often come in pairs (another strange thing!) and they unfold on different floors, as it were, of the mind, so that one can no longer find peace anywhere: go up, you have Bach partita no. 3; go down, you have Dies irae. But this piece of Ysaye (as the whole sonata) is not a musical kaleidoscope, it is an exorcism!

Yes, Couch, Larry Bunker on drums. I have revisited the Village Vanguard LP, and the trio with Scott LaFaro and Paul Motian remains my favorite.
I heard Bill Evans at Town Hall in NYC years ago, playing solo. His solo recordings are my runner up favorite format.

Strange Fruit
Billie Holiday
Strange Fruit
Songwriters: WIGGINS, DWAYNE P. / PEARL, MAURICE / ALLAN, LEWIS
Southern trees bear a strange fruit,
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root,
Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze,
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees.
Pastoral scene of the gallant south,
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth,
Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh,
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh.
Here is fruit for the crows to pluck,
For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck,
For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop,
Here is a strange and bitter crop.

Haunting song, UC.
Fortunately those trees bare fruit no more.

On a dark gloomy rainy day. Thinking about what might have been. A little Tom Waits.

Title: If I Have To Go
And if I have to go, will you remember me?
Will you find someone else, while I'm away?
There's nothing for me, in this world full of strangers
It's all someone else's idea
I don't belong here, and you can't go with me
You'll only slow me down
Until I send for you, don't wear your hair that way
If you cannot be true, I'll understand
Tell all the others, you'll hold in your arms
That I said I'd come back for you
I'll leave my jacket to keep you warm
That's all that I can do
And if I have to go, will you remember me?
Will you find someone else, while I'm away?
