A bit like Cary Grant portraying Cole Porter in Night and Day. Porter had great style but was not nearly so handsome or physically graceful as Grant, while Grant could not approach the wit, campiness, or musical talent of Porter (who wrote for Gertrude Lawrence in the film The Battle of Paris and the West End show Nymph Errant).

Couch - yes - and the fact that Gertrude Lawrence had songs and shows written for her (Someone To Watch Over Me and The King and I) underscores her importance as an entertainer but an importance which, like several others, they say, is not so apparent on the screen. I think that her gift was essentially as a live entertainer. However, we will never personally know as she died before we were born!
