I wholeheartedly agree with the Katie Stewart Times cookbook. Especially the avocado mousse recipe!

On the wine front, I also like the Oxford Companion to Wine by Jancis Robinson.

The Cook's Companion by Stephanie Alexander. http://www.stephaniealexander.com.au/bo ... companion/ Great recipes that mere mortals can prepare with simple equipment. Being an Australian book, there is a strong Mediterranean influence in recipe selection, with many Asian recipes as well.
