Marling and Evans

Hi, While in Savile Row, I saw a pow db displayed in one of the basement windows. It turned out to be a single saxony milled finish ( 95% lambswool, 5% cashmere), by Marling and Evans. Has anyone any experience with these cloths, or others from the makers. I understand they have provided for Ralph Lauren's purple label...and are known for luxury cloths....any feedback appreciated, as usual....thanks.

Rowly:

A Prince of Wales check suit in a 95% wool/5% cashmere blend isn't a guarantee of luxury or longevity. It's simply a wool suit with a pinch of inferior cashmere thrown in. You will pay more for yardage, a lot more.
You would be better served by searching for a pure saxony wool with a soft hand or a West of England woollen flannel for your PoW, either of which will last longer. Try Smith Woollens, Harrisons of Edinburgh and Dugdale for your cloth. Whether you choose a saxony or a woollen flannel for your commission, have an extra pair of trousers made.

I can confirm that I have used cloths from this producer, and they are categorically first rate, and nothing about the fibres used or production techniques are second rate. I would recommend any of their cloths.

M & E is best known for their Saxony cloth, flannels, coverts and cavalry twills, all of excellent quality.

Like JMB, I prefer the rougher hand of the flannels without addition of cashmere. M & E makes both. I am not sure they wear longer, but they feel more sturdy. I will stop by PV next week and take a look at their latest offerings.

Thanks so far....and Michael...I'm looking forward to participating in the cloth club as soon as I get a bit more experience. To date , I have chosen cloths that didn'nt turn out as I expected from the swatch...so I'm being more cautious..and taking more care in my selections. Currently I'm looking for an oatmeal pow, with red overcheck....all I've seen to date are too light when the light catches them....I'm also looking for a herringbone with narrow chevrons in a greeny grey sort of granite colour...I've only seen this in a blue grey in books. Ede and R....have a db rtw in this but they couldn't tell me the pattern book or suppliers.......this is why photos and the associated cloth references are so helpful to beginners like me !...thanks....Rowly.

I picked up a 3 piece in this fabric from Graham Browne on Friday. It looks, and feels, wonderful and I'm extremely pleased. Given Russell & Dan at GB hadn't used any M&E fabrics for a while it was a little bit of a gamble, but I think it has paid off.

Can you let us know what weight the cloth is, and if there is an overcheck on the plaid?

Very nice! Is this their saxony with or without 5% cashmere? How do you find the cloth to wear? It's good your risk paid off...nice to have something a bit individual. Well done!

It's with the cashmere. It's very comfortable to wear - not as warm as I had feared. It was fine to wear all day in the office with the jacket on, and kept me warm enough in the chill wind in London as I walked to lunch and to the train.
