I am not sure exactly, it has been discussed on here before but I can't find it now. Buttons on some military uniforms used to be detachable -they had a brass loop at the back that was passed through a hole in the fabric and then fixed in place with something like a hairpin. I imagine something similar would be a solution if you could source the buttons. However, there is almost certainly a simpler solution.

I loved the G&H blue hopsack blazer with below patch pockets but I do not think it would double that well as the jacket of a business or more formal suit, even with brown horn buttons. I would keep it as a blazer/odd jacket and skip the interchangeable buttons.
On the other hand, the questionable idea of a double purpose blazer has been executed by "The Doctor" DeBoise with, IMO, much better results and in this case the interchangeable buttons do make a big difference. Steed is starting to grow more on me every time.
