Could anyway comment on the use of "inside" pleats, single or double, as well as single vs. double pleats on the conventional outside?
My understanding is the single pleats outside are rather old fashioned, but what about the inside pleats? If there are advantages to fit with pleats, is it simply a matter of appearance to put the pleat(s) inside?
I ask because I am not fond of pleats on pants, but may have to succumb to them for comfort and fit reasons.
Inside Pleats on pants?
Not sure what you mean. Do you mean forward v. reverse pleats?
Actually, you may have answered the question. I am in the office and don't have the book handy, but it is one of the well known better written and illustrated books on men's clothing and tailoring. (I think two Italian authors well illustrated coffee table size). They make mention of one and two pleasts, inside and outside, and I guess, you have explained it: I think in medical terms, medial or lateral, but maybe they are referring to direction rather than "iinside"----I am humbled.
Now, what about single vs. double (more common) pleats--the book, and I will get the reference for you later, says thet the single pleats are not so common anymore????

Single pleats are a bit cleaner looking. Double pleats are a bit more comfortable when you sit down. Double pleats are the norm.
Please see page 73, The Elegant Man, by Villarossi & Angelli:
I rather like the single pleat illustrated. Why is it now out of favor?
With regards to "inside" or "outside" (single or double) which is preferred?

Terry,
Single pleats are relatively common in the UK. I always get suit trousers with single pleats, though I favour flat fronts for moleskins and other "odd trousers".

I always get single pleats, turned inward. Double-pleated pants are too full for me, and flat-fronts have too little pocket space.
