What does one wear during the winter when it is snowing outside but one has to wear a suit to attend certain events? Surely wearing brogues is unwise? What is an acceptable tough alternative?

I am not sure if they are acceptable but reindeer-skin boots could be chic in snowy weather. They will fit in.

Moleskins and heavy boots outdoors, with suit trousers and formal shoes in my briefcase. Just change in the washroom.

I have seen some old pictures of men wearing black riding boots with their suits during the winter, trousers tucked into the boots, quite odd it gave them a very... Erm... Military look.

Going out in insulated winter boots, when it is -30°C and changing, as "Man at C&A" suggests, is also very common, especially for woman.

Google Swims Rubber Overshoes, which will keep the soles and uppers of your brogues dry in rainy weather or in a light dusting of snow. They come in a variety of colors. John Lobb carries them, but
you should be able to buy them directly from Swims. If the snow is up to your knees, what you really
need is a pair of rubber gumboots and a good supply of thick woollen over-the-calf-length hosiery.
Midwesterners in the United States affectionately refer to them as Chinese shitkickers (which is where they're made) and buy them at Home Centers. Not terribly stylish, but very useful in whiteout storms
or a flood in the cellar.

Dear AoW,

I live in a country with lots of snow. All I usually do when there is snow or slush in the streets is wearing the usual oxfords or brogues but with a rubber sole. Leather soles are slippery on snow and you risk your bones.

I wear Redwing boots 9039 Beckman in winter with jeans. Redwing is an old American company producing a very good product, will last for ever and can be repaired.

Being from Minnesota, I know a thing or two about covering ones shoes and trouser cuffs.

If you'll watch the opening segment of Airport at 6 min and 16 sec. into the clip you'll see Burt Lancaster put on a pair of boots that cover his trouser bottoms and I think his shoes as well.

BTW, the movie was filmed at the Twin Cities Airport. My Mother remembers that winter of 1969 very well.

BTW, the movie was filmed at the Twin Cities Airport. My Mother remembers that winter of 1969 very well.

I live in Calgary Alberta and winters no lower than minus five would be a Godsend. The snow removal from the video clip can last from November to April in the mid west USA & Canada. The snow you get in the U.K. is considered heavy ran. Not ment to be demeaning.
