Occasion-alism and Style

"He had that supreme elegance of being, quite simply, what he was."

-C. Albaret describing Marcel Proust

Style, chic, presence, sex appeal: whatever you call it, you can discuss it here.

Clearly, the occasion should make an impact on how you dress. There is no style if you don't listen to the tune of the occasion, for instance, remembering who you are going to meet, the agenda, the weather, the place. If you don't care about the occasion, comedy or quixotism is a likely result.

However, style is much more than synchronising with the occasion. Style is bringing a gift. Style is playing with expectations and the history about how to dress properly for the specific occasion. Style provides the extraordinary. Style is not about fulfilling a scheme like a well behaved school boy.

A man of style respects the occasion but doesn't subject himself to occasion-alism.

Style is being yourself on any occasion and thus never being the same.
