Loden Coat

Thinking two seasons ahead - is it worthwhile getting a Loden overcoat made up or, given what appears to be a certain latitude inherent in the style, would RTW be likely to work just as well? If the latter I would be pleased to hear of a retailer of the genuine article in the UK.

i believe schneider's of austria is the most common maker of real ldoen overcoats
i have one, and although i like it , its style isnt exactly tops

Once upon a time Loden Frey in Munich was a brilliant place for indestructible loden though in recent years they have de-emphasised traditional Bavarian designs. Personally, my feeling is that loden better suits capes than conventional overcoats. Now, getting a loden cape made up could certainly be worthwhile: there are one or two to be spotted around on wintry London streets!

After searching the obvious retailers in central London I think I can confidently say a Loden coat is not to be had there. However, I will be in Berlin in December; a little closer to home perhaps. Any suggestions?

No Loden in Berlin as far as I could see.

But I am going to Vienna in June. Surely.....

I have seen them sold in the basement of Swaine Adeney Brigg, and there is a slightly strange Austrian clothes shop very near Chelsea & Westminster Hospital, although its website isn't promising: http://www.swannsway.com/

Let us know how you get on - I've long thought that a good loden coat would be a great asset in the country in winter.

Yes, Vienna was the place - at Loden Plankl. There were a number of styles and colours but I went for traditional green, "A" pleat in the back and mid-calf length. Also available with and without detachable lining. All in all very pleased with it after my long search, should prove very effective against the winter elements.
