NJSthe smell of cordite from a first good shot in the crisp morning air
Do you speak for yourself? If not, you may presume that we're better shots than we are!
Now if you had said the smell of cordite from the first good shot after a large lunch and three glasses of port, I'd have been persuaded!
At any rate, I'd be interested in anything you write!

Thanks, George and Carl...and hours after I first read your entry, Carl, the main point has just occurred to me: but 'modern smokeless powders' doesn't sound as good, in context, as 'cordite'.

Excellent book!!! Much more than just "accessories" - all a gentleman about town needs to know!! Having read your book, my upcoming visit to London will be greatly more informed and fulfilling. I heartily recommend this volume to all.
Cheers, st.tully

Thanks, St Tully. I have heard that the tobacconist Shervington's (formerly John Brumfitt), mentioned in the book, has closed (after writing but before publication), so we can add that to the 'lost gems' of London; however Holborn Bars (in which it was situated), is still worth a visit as one of the last remaining timbered Tudor buildings to survive the Great Fire and Staple Inn behind; then you can wander over the road, to Hatton Garden, for The Mitre. The alleyway down to it is very long but I am not sure whether it reaches 25 metres.

The Mitre is absolutely on my list. I have several meetings at the Inner Temple and plan on punctuating with Mitre and El Vino. I have never lunched at El Vino but hope to do so - or perhaps go at the end of the workday. I have only visited mid afternoon and paid silent homage to the great man with a large glass of Chateau Thames Embankment.
St Tully - in El Vino's, don't forget to see the commemorative brass plaque on the front desk, near the door and, while you are in there, have a glass of Chateau Embankment or Chateau Fleet Street for me!
