Amazon's recommendations have caught up with me and as well as the usual style books there are a couple of technical books recommended.

Classic Tailoring Techniques: A Construction Guide for Menswear by Robert Cabrera and
Tailoring: The Classic Guide to Sewing the Perfect Jacket published by Creative Publishing International

Has anyone seen these, or can recommend any other books that would help a novice learn the ins and outs of tailoring?
I have no intention of taking the DIY path but anything that helps me to understand the process of constructing clothes would, I believe, help me when commissioning new pieces.

I have both of these, they are very good. On the topic of pants and shirt construction I can recommend you to seek for David Page Coffin's books Shirtmaking and Making trousers. There are also a lot of good e-sources out there. I'm listing just few of them, I will try to add more when I'll have a bit more time
