With or with out a tie , shirt collars are to low and flat these days. Look at the dapper gents of the 20s and 30s. Sharp , raised , they move with the wearer.

Well said, Frank. Low shirt collars that neither frame the face of the wearer nor complement the knot of his tie always remind me of tortoises retreating into their shells. If a man is going to stick his neck out, he deserves a good two inches of collar.

Yes , 2 inches is good.. Sometimes a bit more . I like 1/2 inch above coat collar for my customers . I cut a 1-1/2 inch collar stand on a coat to start. Sometimes 1-3/4 ..

I challenge someone to find a high-profile signature architect who wears anything other than head-to-toe black.

Renzo Piano simply dresses like a fairly well-dressed Italian man of his age: citified gun club sportscoats, flannel trousers, buttondown shirts, and regimental ties. Curiously, many big names in early and mid-century modernist architecture and design (Van der Rohe, Breuer, Loos, etc.) didn't care for explicitly expressing their design philosophy through their dress, and were much better off for it.



Perhaps the deeper point is this: unlike buildings and furniture, clothing is not something to be heavily stylised and designed. It should rather develop organically, within a tradition. Obviously I need an argument for that thesis -- I'll think about it.
