Over the years I've acquired many different types of pocket squares. But i've encourted a problem with some of them, in which the border or line is so far away from the edge, that when I fold the square in a pointed puff shape the border or line is in the pocket and not exposed outside the way it should be.

I tried raising the square upwards, but it looks very silly. (Maybe Paul Stuart can get away with it in their catalogs, but not me). :D

I then thoght to myself, why not have the edges rolled down a little bit!!!!!

So my question is, does anyone know if the four edges of a pocket square can be rolled down?

I also bring this up becasue the threading has come undone a bit on the edging of an old pocket square of mine as well.

I do understand that this would reduce the size of the pocket square overall, but I have a way of dealing with that.

I'm going to share a little secret with all of you.   Sometimes when a pocket ends up swallowing up most or all of my square, I have one or two folded up paper towels in rectangular form to act as a riser inside the pocket.

You might inquire whether David and Noina and the other good folks at Sam Hober can re-roll the edges of your squares. Their work is exquisite.

Hi

Any chance of posting pics of the problem? And the edges to be re-sewn?

I see no impediment, but I think you need to unstitch the edge, cut away the extra silk (pulling a thread to keep it straight) and redo the roll & stitching, so it's not an easy task (30x4=120 cm of hand rolling per square...). Why not fold them differently to expose more of the center than the edges (particularly on patterned squares)?

I'm sorry I don't have digital camera. I did take one of my squares to my haberdasher yesterday, and he's going to see what the tailor is able to do.

I will also keep Sam Hober in mind as well. Thanks for the tip Couch.

In regards to your statment Costi, about folding differenly to expose more of the center than the edge, I'm trying to expose both the center and some edge at the same time.

I guess you could say, I not only want my cake and eat it to, but also want dessert wine with it as well.  :D

You're the first I hear complaining about having deep pockets ;)
Anyway, your style is surely not below that line, it is beyond it.

My linen square came back from my tailor last week. He was able to take down the edges and sew the new edges down. the edge aren't hand rolled but it still looks great. I'm going to see if he can do my silk squares next.

Cufflink79,

Good news that your pocket square remaking worked out well.

Here is some reference information:

To remove the stitches from 4 rolled edges of a luxury pocket square takes around 12 to 20 minutes depending on the pocket square. Although some very low end pocket squares can be done much faster as there will be less stitches per inch.

There is no need to remove a line of thread when cutting as this is likely to cause more problems than it will solve. If the pocket square was cut correctly originally there will not be a problem when cutting the edges.

To reroll and sew the edges to a luxury standard (tight stitches - perfectly balanced with mitered edges) will take on average 1.5 hours of very skilled work which will not be possible in the average tailor's shop and possibly nowhere in the US at any price.

If the edges are simply machine sewn it will not be much work so the entire project would be around roughly 30 minutes work of low level work. Perhaps $10 in the US?

To correctly redo the entire pocket square by hand to a bespoke/luxury level would be around $25 if we were doing it. And much higher in France or Italy.

I am curious what did your tailor charge?

For my linen square I wasn't charged because of all the other work I've brought in over the years. For my silk squares I'm very strongly considering bringing them to you Mr. Hober.
