In a recent thread, Mr. Porteus asked for advice regarding clothes and styles a “creative man” or one employed in a creative field might be best to choose. One of the suggestions was the classic gray flannel suit.
This illustration sums the argument up quite well:

Illustration of the week # 23: Thinking man's style?
May I submit this as excellent evidence for another post, too.
The more I look at this suit, the more I love it: the elegant taper of the sleeve and amount of linen it shows, the natural-looking roll of the the lapel through the top buttonhole, the balanced shape and proportion of the lapels, the perfect height of the notch and angle of the collar/lapel seam, the degree of opening and roundness of the front quarters, the ideal length of the jacket on the wearer's frame. Any "extras" would do nothing but spoil this harmony. The gent even chose to tuck his flaps inside the pockets. The trousers are perfect - full across the hips (comfortable!), tapering towards the bottom for shape, finished off with proportionate turnups sitting just above the shoe vamp.
Chromatically, the light gray suit is a simple, masterfully designed frame for the superb tie / carnation duo supported by the warm tone of the shirt. The discreetly showing pocket square gives life to the gray background, linking suit and shirt organically. The shoes complement the accessories.
Nothing is too much, nothing is missing, everything is in balance: that's my checklist for ELEGANCE!
Here is the same suit, made in a darker flannel, worn with a different shirt and tie by a real-life elegant dresser...
