Mention ha been made in the Great Photographs thread about the Duke of Windsor's loud sports' clothes - especially golfing clothes. I suppose that this is partly accounted for by the Scottish origin of the game - as they often wear plaids and checks and tartans in Scotland - and, maybe, also because a golf ball is a seriously dangerous missile and one way to avoid being struck by a ball is to make oneself as conspicuous as possible. He seems to have become a master at it. Generally speaking, though, in his clothing, he was well turned out and that is probably as much a tribute to the steadfastness of his makers as anything.

Whether golfing or tromping over the heather on the hill with walking stick in hand, the Scots have a unique ability to mix patterns and textures and colors that eludes dressers in other parts of the world. The Scots invariably get it right, while everyone else ends up looking like a blithering idiot. What is it about the Scottish ability to dress well for country life that no one else seems able to master?

It may be that (golf aside!) they choose cloths (especially the estate tweeds) and patterns that blend in with the landscape - especially important for camouflage in their various country sports.Jordan Marc wrote:Nicholas:
