Am I really a bespoke artisan?

I don’t know if any of you have read Alden’s latest Illustration of the Week #18 post but you really should because I have a real bone to pick with him on this one.

Alden, what is it with the idée fixe about simple, timeless, elegance? If our young members buy clothes that are elegant and hence always stylish and if you continue to make cloth that will never wear out or go out of fashion, you are going to put us clothes makers, I mean, “tailors” out of business.

The way it is today is just fine. The inexperienced buyer has been convinced that the more stuff, er “detailing”, we can tailor into a coat, the better tailors we must be. The only input HAL needs is a click on the “full Monty” program, and every possible accoutrement is cut and tailored automatically. Let’s leave things as they are, OK?

If the blinking coat goes out of fashion in a year, our customer will be back for a new one. Capisce? But if he is well dressed in your CC fabrics we may have to wait for his first born to come of age, hoping it is a boy, to have another shot at him!

Ciao

Dear Mr. Giani!

It is wonderful to see that you, after working long and hard for the Maharajah, his wife, 163 concubines, 4 legitimate and 476 illegitimate children and last, but not least the 5731,5 inhabitants of his wonderful maharajahdom, are back and ready to serve the rest of the world.
I expect only the best, which is, according to my former tailor, Henry Cool on Savile Bow, who sadly can no longer take orders, what you are all about.
My new wardrobe has to match my Eric Glennie shirts and accessories and my hand-made Mart Wal shoes.
Would it be possible to meet your wonderful cutter HAL this year, or do I have to wait until 2010 for a first contact?

Highest regards,

SG

Alden is at it again. And this time he is paired up with Messrs Uppercase and Pur Sang.

Measurements not enough…what a hoot. Look I am tailor and if you give me some numbers, I’ll make you a coat.

And if you give me numbers and pictures of your girlfriend, I’ll make you a nicer coat. Capisce?

SG: I was busy filling out Christmas cards to the Majah and family. Hal is due to terminate, I mean, retire in 2010 and he will be replaced by his brother-in-law, MAC. Thanks for writing. Arty.
