A TRUE CHRISTMAS STORY

This happened years ago, when I lived in Manhattan. It was Christmas eve, and I was making my way up Park Avenue through a blinding snowstorm. Head down and forging ahead as best I could, I seemed to be the only pedestrian in sight. Other than the sound of the wind, the avenue was utterly still. I'd given up looking for a taxi blocks ago and trudged on, coat collar turned up and holding onto my fedora to keep it from blowing away.

A figure in black suddenly loomed up before me out of nowhere. We collided, then stepped back from each other.

I said: "I'm terribly sorry."

"No, it was my fault. I didn't see you."

I recognized the voice immediately. It was Garbo. She was completely hidden in a long black coat with an upturned collar of black fur that sparkled with snowflakes. I could just make out her eyes under the brim of her hat.

"Merry Christmas, Greta Gustafsson!"

She peeled back the lapels of her coat, raised her head and smiled. "Oh, how nice to hear my name...my real name...just before Christmas."

The face was older than her screen personna but still beautiful, and her eyes were lovely. When she spoke you could hear Camille and Mata Hari and Anna Karenina. "Merry Christmas to you, too." she said, smiling.

She wrapped the coat up round her face and continued walking down Park Avenue. I turned and watched her until the snow enveloped her completely.

It's a Christmas I've never forgotten.

Conscious that I am breaking a rule here (although my bespoke orders of one Hedy Lamarr and one Ava Gardner have still not arrived) - I have to say: that's a wonderful story, JMB.

Another two Golden Oldies - Elsie Randolph - not the greatest beauty - but a very talented and amusing comedienne and singer - and Jack Buchanan's clinch for many years:

The Bespoke Forum has surprised us with the opportunity to bespeak Hedy Lamarr, Ava Gardner et al. in gift wrappings of choice Cloth Club fabrics. As if that weren't enough, now we learn that Sartorial Vacations don't just offer a view of verdant, rolling hills and sparkling ocean beyond! 8)

PS Should there not be an animated emoticon of a gent lifting his hat. Anyway, regard it as virtually done.

If relatives are permitted - and why not? - here are two of mine. To set the record straight (many brunettes), in the first photo, a blonde - on the right - and then, in the second photo, a redhead not, technically, great photos but there we are:

Hedy Lamarr was my type of woman. Incredibly beautiful AND a genius -- thanks to her, years later we have mobile phones.
