Brogues and suits
As we all know, brogues are country shoes. That's why many think they shouldn't even exist in black. Yet in Italy many well dressed men wear brown/tan brogues with blue or grey worsted business suits. A regional idiosyncrasy or total abomination?
A very interesting thread on this topic was initiated last September. It would be interesting, imho, to carry on this discussion in that thread, unless one has reason to pursue this debate anonymously.

It all depends on where you are going. If you are going to any kind of public place (bar, restaurant, theatre etc.), you certainly won't be leaving home with your galloshes on! But if you're going on a visit to a friend's home and if there is a good probability that you will walk over a long distance, or the streets are muddy (not very likely in a big city), or they are covered in snow but you don't want to wear boots, then the best thing to do is put your galoshes over your shoes so that, upon your arrival, you won't either have to feel ashamed for leaving cakes of mud on your host's floors or (worse!) take off your shoes at the door.marcelo wrote:I think of galoshes as accessories I would not go outdoors with, though I might well return home with them on.
Dear Garu, I understand that is a rule in Japan, but in Europe, as a guest, as you certainly know, it is not a socially acceptable practice.garu wrote:in our homes, we take our shoes off
Better yet, not only will you save your host a carpet cleaning as well as the sight of your wet socks, but your feet will be dry and comfortable.
I think the same applies in the case of going to your own office, as long as there is a convenient place for you to leave your galoshes.
Oops, sorry, I meant to post that in another thread, but had too many windows open...

Brown brogues with blue or grey suits would be regarded as an abomination in the City of London. Black oxfords or loafers are the norm.
I didn't really mean that absinthe should be substituted for Lillet in Vesper martinis...Anonymous wrote:Oops, sorry, I meant to post that in another thread, but had too many windows open...

Maybe, London City boys should be paying more attention to their footwork, rather than their footwear - before the whole bloody shooting match goes down the pan! The US$ is buoyant; the Garden Broom GB£ is sinking - very noticeably from here!! The trouble is that some folk can't see the wood for the trees. That's what I call an abomination! Even if some members believe it less than comme il faut to address these concerns!Anonymous wrote:Brown brogues with blue or grey suits would be regarded as an abomination in the City of London. Ha! There is really no danger with me typing while drunk, I have a baby liver and almost any amount of strong alcohol instantly sedates me...Anonymous wrote:I didn't really mean that absinthe should be substituted for Lillet in Vesper martinis...Anonymous wrote:Oops, sorry, I meant to post that in another thread, but had too many windows open...

It seems that the post I had meant to write here disappeared altogether. It said that Italians seem to me to care less about "appropriateness" and more about the pure aesthetics of associating colours and textures, regardless of the hystorical origins of various pieces of dress. That applies particularly to the North, while the South tends to hold closer to its sartorial tradition.
These unorthodox associations don't look so bad on Italians. However, as soon as you try to export this look, it loses all its charm because on one hand men don't have the same aplomb and attitude in sporting them and on the other hand they don't fit the landscape elsewhere. So I think yes, it is after all a local idiosincrasy.
The £/$ rate is back to where it was a few years ago. $2 to the £ was never sustainable. Our American colleagues should not be too smug - Slick Willy and his Lady Macbeth are back!Anonymous wrote:Maybe, London City boys should be paying more attention to their footwork, rather than their footwear - before the whole bloody shooting match goes down the pan!
