Thank you both - indeed all of you - as it has got off to a flying start thanks largely to couch's mentioning it hereabouts. It is a two-edged sword being known to have a book out but I hope that, apsrt from anything else, it might amuse!

I've just been looking at some Cary Grant pictures, and it's incredible how his double breasted coat looks. the lapel is so wide and clean, the way it falls in the front. so plain even when he is sporting a handkerchief on his breast pocket. Was this because he was slim, or was it the cut of his jacket? probably both.

By the way can anyone recommend me a good Cary grant movie from the 30's or 40's? apart from bringing up baby, and his girl Friday. i mean stylish movies.

Gentlemen:

"That Touch of Mink" and "The Grass is Greener" were actually from the '60's.

In the requested time period (30's & 40's), I would add the following to NJS' list:

- "The Awful Truth";
- "The Bishop's Wife"; and
- "Mr. Blandings".

I mention these only because of the request for "stylish" movies. "The Awful Truth" is a particularly good movie.

There are many good "stylish" CG movies to recommend from the '50's.

- "To Catch a Thief";
- "An Affair to Remember";
- "Indiscreet";
- "North by Northwest";

And from the '60's - "Charade".

Regardless of the decade, you should find that CG's "stlye" was classical throughout all these films. His dress would look as appropriate today as it did then. These films prove, "classic 'style' is timeless".

Gentlemen, I can't remember weather it was on this blog or another, but there's a photo somewhere of a lable on the inside of CG's coat in North By Northwest. I believe someone went through the film frame by frame, and found a fuzzy image of the label, then compared it to the label of a well known hollywood tailor, and came up with a match.

i love charade the colors, the music, and Cary Grant is dressed like a modern politician in it. also, I'd like to see the new release of notorious, I've never seen that film.

I don't call the Lounge a blog, but a thread in the Lounge showed that label and identified it as that of an Italian-named tailor in or near Hollywood. However, as has also been pointed out in the Lounge, Mr. Grant wore more than one identical suit in the film, so other tailors might have made one or more of those.

And since we are on CG still - I have just remembered a real CG story which is related in A Class Apart. by Graham McCann:

CG stayed in a Bristol hotel when he visited his mother and one day ordered room service; the knock came at the door and CG opened it to a startled waiter who blurted out "Jesus Christ" to which CG replied - "No - Cary Grant"
