Pls. advise brands of the best over the calf socks.

How long should a cotton or a wool sock be expected to last assuming ,say, wearing once a week.

Falke is superb. I rarely wear anything else. As for a lifecycle, much depends on the sock's material, type of wear, shoe fit, and the foot itself. For example, I have a problem with the back of my feet (which, thankfully for you, I shall not describe), that causes all but my most synthetic of socks to wear out in little time. Consequently, I shun cashmere, wool, or cotton socks because of the cost versus life cycle.

Ditto on the otc Pantherella socks.

As for how long the sock lasts, I've never really given that any thought? I've had most of my socks for a few years now, mainly due to the fact that I only wear certain patterns every once and a while because I don't want to wear them out. :)

Pantherella is a well made sock, I know this because I do a lot of walking and they have held up very well over time.

I have found my Falkes to be of a more substantial build than the Pantherellas, though some of my sea island cotton Pantherellas have held up well.

Gentlemen:

Pantherella OTC's are great. I have worn through many in all too short time. Falke's are better for me. I am sure this can "solely" (yes - pun is intended) be attibuted to the terrible deformaties associated with my feet.

Unfortunately I go through socks like most people go through . . . (fill in with whatever simile you wish!). My deformed feet require Falke's more substance over Pantherella's softer touch. Are any of you familiar with Gallo socks?

Gallo are not bad however sometimes the OTC socks are not high enough.

That may be because they make them for a shorter Italian leg.....?

In any case, to get them to fit properly (i.e., high enough over the calf), I need to buy a larger foot size than I really need; the larger foot sizes are correspondingly higher.

I like the socks over at Paul Stuart but don't know if these are Pantherella or another brand.

Where can you find Falke in NYC?

As to longevity, well it's easy to get holes in most socks pretty quickly if you've got a hot spot on your shoes or even a toe nail which isn't cut close. But otherwise, with normal washing and wear, I think a good sock should last at least through 50 or more daily wearings if in cotton or wool and longer if partially synthetic.

What is, actually, OTC?

OTC = over the calf, the only length sock that a gentleman should wear.

This is another one for the US/British English list as in the UK it is half hose.

Beware of mezza calza!!

Gentlemen:

I reside outside of New York City so I cannot speak to where to buy Falke there. I buy online. I assume OTC is used here for "over the counter". Assuming I presuppose correctly, raises an interesting issue. Are any members aware of custom socks - although I am unsure of any real need for custom socks - even with my screwey feet.

No, but if you're at risk of DVT, similar socks may be available on prescription.

This depends wholly on climate, dear sir. In the Antipodes, anything more than gartered mid-calf socks is suicide in Summer...

Living in a very hot climate, I don't agree that OTC is too hot.

To me, a cotton, OTC can hardly be noticed even in the hottest weather.

In any case, even if an OTC felt uncomfortable in the Summer, I would bear it and avoid the embarrasment of showing bare leg under a trouser.
