I will give W&J serious consideration.
A question, applicable generally too I suppose - I have heard so many good things about Mr. Plews I am tempted to work with him if I decide to go the W&J route. If I avail myself of a fitting or 2 back in the US, however, it seems that it is Mr. Cottrell that makes the trips.
What is the suggested tradeoff that should be made here:
- work with Mr. Cottrell, though I have not seen any personal recommendations
- work with Mr. Plews, recognizing that it is possible that some of the fittings would not be performed by him
Many Thanks!

If Malcolm nails your pattern through the initial visit and follow-up fittings, you should be in much better shape than you fear.

Indeed. Mr Plews can measure you and draft your pattern when you are in London. He might be able to fit in a second fitting before you leave. After that, you can deal with Mr Cottrell in the US. Take heart from the fact that Malcolm must have confidence in Mr Cottrell.Concordia wrote:If Malcolm nails your pattern through the initial visit and follow-up fittings, you should be in much better shape than you fear.
Also, IIRC, David Beckham is a customer of W&J.
From my recent experience W&J can have a first fitting ready for you within three weeks. I dare say if you explained your circumstances this might be done more quickly. If Mr. Plews is happy with the first fitting he may go straight to finish, as he did with me, in which case it could be shipped to you. It would then be a matter of perhaps popping into the shop when you were back in London to discuss the need for alterations to your pattern. Future garments should then be straightforward.
Incidentally BofB, what does IIRC mean? And who is David Beckham?

Gentlemen,
Thanks for assuaging some of my fears!
Scot, may I ask how your experience has been at W&J? I assume you are pleased by the process? If you might have any finished garments from them, are you very pleased with the fit, details, workmanship, etc? You would recommend them?
Many Thanks

I hope to get my suit from W&J in the next few days. Will be happy to report the outcome.

IIRC means "If I Recall Correctly". David Beckham is the tattooed husband of a past-it pop star who can't sing. Apparently, he is quite famous in his own right.Scot wrote:Incidentally BofB, what does IIRC mean? And who is David Beckham?
Scot, any news about your suit?
Yes, I have taken delivery of my suit and am generally very pleased with it. The cut is classic military - clean chest and back, waist suppression and flaired skirt. It fits just a fraction too closely for my liking and I may go back for adjustments. The finishing is very good.
I am have some photos but don't know how to include them; I had thought it would be a simple matter of copying and pasting but apparently not. I have read Mr. Alden's post on this and it would seem that the images need to have a url. I don't know how to do that. Can any kind soul help?

Scot,
I think there is a "sticky" somewhere on this forum which describes a method for saving and posting photographs. If you do not find it, look up on one or the other of the "competing" fora. They all have a "how to post pictures" thread. Follow the instructions closely. Even I have been known to succeed...

You write that the fit is too close. Is that because the range of your movements is being restricted by the garment, or it is that the coat looks unusually close-fitting, compared with your other suits?Scot wrote:Yes, I have taken delivery of my suit and am generally very pleased with it. I have looked at the "sticky". It begins with the words "First you need a web-accessible image". That, I am afraid, resulted in what is known in sporting circles as my falling at the first hurdle.
With regard to the questions about closeness of fit - both. I have about an inch less room around the waist than on the suits I feel most comfortable in and I am unable to cross my arms in front of my chest, with the button fastened, without things feeling a little stretched.[/quote]

Hmmmmmm...I would then look at the "askandyaboutclothes" or "styleforum" websites for instructions. Do not despair: even I managed it .
Closeness of fit: When you next see Mr. Plews, he may be able to adjust it. Also, the cloth and seams may stretch a little. My own tailor always asks me to wear a new suit on my next visit, for a visual check. I think (I am no expert) that a miltary cut may be a bit tighter, more precise. I find it flatters my body shape or lack thereof. I do not find that it restricts may range of motion.
