I recently discovered that there does indeed exist a certain something that one applies to the side of the soles of one's shoes, on the welt. Up until this point I have been merely dabbing a bit of shoe polish onto a cloth and then rubbing it into the welt so as to achieve a uniform colour free of scuffs. However, after stumbling across this (http://homepage2.nifty.com/cobblers-web ... ecial.html) it seems that there is a specific dressing for this task. My question is, where would I find some? I have never seen anything like this in a shoe or cobbler's shop here in Australia or anywhere else in my various travels (though this could be because I wasn't keeping an eye out) and would desperately like to get my hands on some. I suspect that the high end shoe makers in London, etc would stock it, but given that I reside 'down under', I would appreciate it if anyone could let me know of any websites that sell it online.

Allen Edmonds has a product called “Heel & Sole Edge Dressing”. There is also another product called “Morello Futura 2000”, but I do not have any experience with it. Some information on the latter is available at http://www.wikihow.com/Polish-Shoes . It should not be applied directly on the leather, but only on the side of sole.

Although I cannot recommend you a brand, I can tell you that there is indeed a special dressing for heels and welts that comes in black and brown (at least). I remember buying a couple of 1 l canisters (for my shoemaker) from a shoemaking supply shop in Palermo a year ago. I imagine any such supply shop would stock it. It is is a thick liquid and is applied with a soft brush or a sponge in successive layers until it is opaque. Any shoemaker needs it and has it - perhaps that's where you could find out where to buy some.

I use Fiebing's, which is not too difficult to find. It seems to do the trick.

Some googling (for 'edging ink') has revealed this: http://www.abbeysaddlery.co.uk/product_ ... ?id=D10750 - a royal warrant, no less, but unfortunately I don't think that I need 5 litres of the stuff. I also found this Australian company (http://www.jabrooks.com.au/FrmProds.htm); I might give them a call on Monday. Unfortunately, this (http://shoeshinekit.stores.yahoo.net/heelsoldres.html), which seems to be just the ticket, cannot apparently be shipped to Australia.
