Gents...

I am in need of fabrics for formal day wear trousers. To be very clear I am looking for fabrics that can be used for formal trousers that CLEARLY say that this is just not some odd suit pants I am combining with a "sport coat" (read stroller). I am open to worsteds, worsted flannels and if it cant be helped then woolen flannels.

I already have the conservative grey chalk striped pants and black with white striped worsteds that I use for such purposes. However, for this new one I need something that people would be Really hard pressed to think that they are just any old suit pants.

I only have two requirements. 1. They should be of a distinctive striped or hounds tooth / shepherd's check pattern as mentioned above. 2. the cloth should be able to hold a sharp crease preferably from a reputable cloth merchant / firm . That is all!

Below are two examples of what I have in mind.

The first is a gorgeous picture of Astaire in formal day wear.

Observe these pants. I am sure you will agree when I say this that you cannot possible mistake them for a suit pant. You could probably make a suit out of this fabric of trousers but at least it is Very unlikely.

Example NO. 2 is from AA post I used last year.

Here the stripe is even bolder and more distinctively formal day wear than what Astaire is wearing. If you observe carefully or have read my last years post you will realize that this cloth here is not just plain stripe but has a very pronounced diagonal weave to it almost giving it a broken herringbone appearance because of the stripe cutting in between.

Anyways, my first choice will be something like what Astaire is wearing, than this. But both are acceptable.

I have already browsed through Lesser formal wear book and they didn't had anything I really cared for.

Please let me know if you have seen any fabric in any of the books that fits in the description above. Oh and the weight should be 12-13 oz range but higher is not a problem also.

I do believe one or two of these may have sold out already but these are H Lesser's current offerings:

Here are the cloth numbers on the backs of the same swatches.

I own a couple of them and they are very nice indeed. I wear them as spare trousers for charcoal grey lounge suits and so get a reasonable bit of wear out of them.

Thanks for the swatches Sator!

The one I like most is 28138 and that is the one I didn't saw. I will double check but if you think 1 or 2 could be sold out then it probably is.

Oh well! I will continue to look.

Yes, 28138 has sold out. I tried to buy some late last year and was told they were out of it. Maybe you might like to inquire if they have anything new to replace it with.

The H&S formal book has a couple of Cashmere stripes in it. There is also a H&S cashmere book with one in it too.
