In a week's time I'm off to Deauville, in Normandy for the weekend. I haven't been before but from what I hear it's a very London Lounge sort of place. I'm hoping to discover a resort of elegance and civilisation. Have any members been? If anyone has been I'd be very grateful if they'd point me in the right direction as far as cafés, restaurants or shops go.

In return I'll report back as to whether or not it has lived up to its reputation on my return.

I haven't been in decades -- since childhood, actually -- but quite liked the place, even though I might prefer Biarritz (not a very LL sort of place, I suppose).

I'm keen to read your report.

Deauville is very nice, with a lot of ‘period’ situations on the promenade (unless I am confusing Deauville and Trouville). The swimming is a little frigid, but the town itself is very nice, though I get the feeling it is not quite as glamorous as it was in the ’40s. I was only passing through when I was there, but it looked very pleasant, and I hope you enjoy your trip.

I believe it's best visited around 1930.

I might have placed its glory days a bit earlier . . . .

RWS - Yes, such as La Belle Epoque. There is also a slightly later great picture of a sun- stroked (stricken?), Churchill, covered with a towel, being ushered off the beach by Beaverbrook, probably aoroung 1920. I'll try to look it out.

I think, not having been near the place except maybe on one occasion and that was a looooooooooooong time ago, that it is now fairly noovo, except perhaps for occasions like the yearling sales and the races. Let me add that I have alas NEVER attended those.

Horse heaven in France. Lovely place. Check on "Prepare your trip." Normandy Barrière is an institution there.

Sad to say --one of the unsung tragedies of modern life, really -- I am NOT in the market to buy a possible Group I winner. I just bespoke another suit and a couple of shirts and I was wondering if my Dear Wife's usual indulgent smile was not showing a bit of strain  . We just spent two days in London.

FiS - possibly not the optimum time to suggest that you were considering to become a supporter of the Turf!!

...unless I can convince my Dear Wife that there lies the future prosperity of our family's finances 8) . When on our joint visits to London she says I behave "like a kid in a candy store", a quaint American expression which does not give justice, I feel, to the deep, almost philosophical, anguish attendant upon the careful selection of a cloth.
