restaurants in Florence
Anybody have any favourites or reccommendations ??...nothing too Ritzy required,,just good food and atmostphere...I go in 3 weeks..

The best meal that I had in Europe in 2006 was at Four d'Acqua in Florence. The owner has boats on the med and has the day's catch delivered to the restaurant by about 4PM. No menu's in the traditional sense, just go with it. A Soave or other wite from the Veneto is magic with the cuisine.

If you want a good steak, Buca Lapi is very traditional with a '50's era brat pack feel. The barrel vaulted ceilings are covered in travel posters that have sepiated with time.
The place is very old, the story has it that it served drivers while their well heeled patrons dined in finer places above the ground. It became a stop on the rat-pack tour (a lesser known version of the grand tour) in the 1950's and is still decorated with travel posters from the era. This is one restaurant that actually had expensive wines on the list - buy something big and red. You don;t have to spend a ton, ask the sommelier or whatever is Italian for "wine guy". Actually that advice works for the steak - buy something big and red. They serve rare so order medium if rare it not your taste. The steaks are huge, serving 2-3 or more people. Our strategy was a ton of vegetable primi and other appetizers and then a steak. I remember that they had an amazing caneloni stuffed with parsleyed ricotta and topped with a mushroom/cream/wild board ragu that was decadent. Note, you will need the red wine to thin your blood.

Neighborhood place - they had an awesome grilled chicken and its one of the few places in Florence that served pasta. They also do "american salads" meaning large and verdant.
