I am surprised that they were vehement. Their manners used to match their history!

Vehement in the sense of forceful but perfectly mannerly.

I've been a client of Davies for about eight years now and am happy with their work. Their MD is very nice, which probably accounts for my going back.

i'm glad to hear it, from the last two posts! There was a story about a very august man, who complained about some piece of work, with the words "I can go anywhere around here, that I please!" and my old cutter told him, using his title, "XYZ - just to go then" and opened the door for him - and he did go - but he returned - and apologised. My own view would be that, if Davies & Son say that something is 'right' or 'not right' or that they can't do it - roll with the punches! They have an unbroken tradition, from 1803, of the very finest craftmanship. - And, no, I am not their appointed agent in South America!!
